Cub Scout Forester Pin Workshop

Cub Scouts March 2008

Free Half-Day Series!

Let us help you! Our City Forest's knowedgeable instructors have designed a course that encompasses all of the Boy Scouts of America Webelo Forester Pin requirements in 2 (two) half-day workshops.

Our presentations are fun-filled and hands-on, utilizing colorful displays, games and handouts.

In addition, scouts will simultaneously benefit their community while helping replant trees at the Our City Forest Kelley Park Tree Bank.

To sign up, please contact the Education Department at (408)99-TREESx6 or education@ourcityforest.org.

Course Topics

1. Common San Jose Tree Species
From the many oak species that are famous in California, to the common native buckeye, we will learn in-depth about multiple local trees. Learn to identify these species using fresh bark, leaf and seed samples. Learn the multiple animal and human uses of these trees.

2. How Old is that Tree
Much can be learned about the individual histories of trees using cross-sectional trunk cuts, a.k.a. "Tree Cookies." Identify evidence of surviving drought, insect infestation, and fire damage. Use a "tree cookie" to correctly determine the age of a tree.

3. Urban Forestry Planning
Caring for and properly planting urban trees is no easy task and requires careful connsideration of local hazards and restrictions, individual neighborhood needs, and species living requirements. Scouts will examine these issues and apply them to multiple real-life scenarios as they plan mock planting projects in local San Jose neighborhoods.

4. Tend Trees with OCF
To fulfill their BSA planting requirement, the Scouts will visit our tree storage facility, also known as the "Tree Bank." Here they will learn planting techniques and receive a full tour. The trees they care for will eventually grow to full size and be planted in San Jose through one of our free planting programs.
