Employment Opportunity: Community Nursery Manager
Description: Our City Forest has been the leading urban forestry non profit in San Jose, California for 25 years. Our two-acre Community Nursery and Training Center supports the organization’s goals and provides suitable, climate-appropriate species that are planted across the Silicon Valley. The nursery is home to over 350 species of drought tolerant trees and plants that are cultivated by a team of AmeriCorps members and 2,500 volunteers annually. The Community Nursery Manager will oversee the long-term development and expansion as well as daily care of the nursery.

Oversee all nursery operations including propagation/greenhouse operations, tree cultivation, maintenance, and pruning, fresh and recycled water irrigation systems upkeep and expansion, hand-watering, demonstration gardens and landscaping on site according to best arboricultural practices and Best Nursery Management Practices.
Provide ongoing training, management, supervision, and evaluation of 7 to 10 AmeriCorps service members annually.
Develop annual nursery operations work plan to effectively execute and delegate nursery tasks.
Perform daily scouting routes to prevent crop issues and enhance nursery work plan.
Direct nursery open hours. Train AmeriCorps members and volunteers to assist residents with city permits and replanting specifications and provide species recommendations and landscape design information.
Maintain annual nursery budget, track receipts, expenses and invoices, and submit requests for all nursery purchases, including purchasing tree stock.
Develop and maintain professional relations with wholesale customers, city partners,and other local agencies.
Organize plant sales, fundraisers, nursery events, workshops and trainings.
Lead compliance with all local, state and federally mandated nursery regulations including OSHA standards, pesticide and chemical use standards, and labor law
Support Our City Forest’s volunteer program by collaborating with Our City Forest staff team to promote the nursery’s volunteer program to support nursery
operations and growth.
Implement effective strategies to recruit ongoing nursery volunteers with technical skills.
Oversee and direct secondary team tasks that support general program operations.
Coordinate with OCF staff to recruit AmeriCorps members and develop and implement an orientation and training plan for new members.
Provide ongoing oversight of member activities and compliance with AmeriCorps policies and regulations including but not limited to: ensuring uniform dress code and professionalism standards are met, reviewing and finalizing time-sheet and performance reports.
Assist with AmeriCorps member recruitment and training.
Assist with other Urban Forestry teams, including but not limited to: Stewardship, Lawnbusters, and Planting.
Valid CA driver’s license.
Ability to work full-time, 40 hours per week. Tuesday - Saturday. Ability to work
weekends and holidays when necessary.
Bachelor's degree and at least three years of greenhouse, nursery, or horticulture
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
Ability to work well independently with minimal supervision and work in a team.
Ability to prioritize assignments under pressure and communicate effectively with team.
Demonstrated experience in routine greenhouse procedures.
Demonstrated experience with irrigation.
Conduct National Service Background Check including a Live Scan and FBI fingerprint
Bilingual in common Bay Area languages (English, Spanish, Vietnamese, etc.)
ISA Certified Arborist or has enough experience to become certified within 6 months of hire
Training and/or experience in tree identification, growth, installation and establishment
Hours: Full time 40 hrs/week, Tuesday - Saturday
Pay: Compensation commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance. Schedule is Tuesday - Saturday, 40 hours per week.
